There’s more than one way to transform your organization’s legacy applications to achieve the agility, speed and customer service level that today’s IT operations require. In fact, Dell IT has unveiled a range of options to begin moving our legacy applications to the cloud.
We have created three IT services to give our business developers a choice of how much or how little they want to upgrade their apps to add cloud capabilities via Platform-as-a-Service, Infrastructure-as-a-Service and VM-as-a-Service.
Before I describe the features of our new service offerings, let me provide some background on how we came up with our strategy.

EMC IT is making giant strides to deliver the capabilities its business customers need, faster and less expensive than ever before through the use of a Platform as a Service (PaaS) solution along with an innovative development methodology.
In June, EMC IT launched EMC Pivotal Cloud Foundry (ECF) PaaS, the on-demand delivery of an automated IT platform which includes compute, network, storage, data protection, security, operations, and monitoring for application development. Our ECF runs on vSphere infrastructure which enables developers and cloud administrators to provision development environments on demand.

When EMC IT embarked on a bold mission to transform its IT operating model almost two years ago, it made perfect sense for EMC IT to turn to an inside resource—our top EMC consultants in the IT Transformation Work Group within EMC Global Services—for help.
After all, the Global Services IT Transformation Practice had years of experience helping clients transform their IT operations to better serve their business clients. Global Services could apply what we knew to move the EMC IT effort forward In turn, our IT Transformation service leaders could benefit from being involved in one of the industry’s largest IT transformations, through which we could hone and refine our consulting approach and practices on a scale we have never done before.
Nineteen months later, EMC’s IT transformation is on track, and our group has gained a long list of new best practices and insights to leverage with other clients going forward.
We used to deliver projects in ERP terms with complex, multi-year investments leaving the business little choice regardless of how long it would take or what it would cost. However, today’s information generation wants convenience and near instant gratification, so if we are not agile or fast enough, they will get their infrastructure, apps or cloud services elsewhere.
To get ahead of this at EMC, we have transformed IT to be more business aligned to dramatically improve innovation, performance and reliability. That said, it is not for the faint of heart, so let me share a few lessons we’ve learned along the way
Traditionally, IT organizations have provided infrastructure and basic support to the business as a monopoly. We used to think of (and deliver) projects in ERP terms with complex, multiyear investments. And, the business had little choice, but to work with us regardless of how long it would take or what it would cost. Those days are slowly disappearing as times and technologies are changing.
Today, the users of IT – the information generation – want the convenience and near instant gratification they can get elsewhere through mobility, cloud applications, software as a service and shadow IT investments. The 2014 EMC Digital UniverseStudy, with research and analysis by IDC, predicts that by 2020 the digital universe will contain nearly as many digital bits as there are stars in the universe.
According to the study, digital growth “is doubling in size every two years and by 2020, the digital universe—the data we create and copy annually—will reach 44 zettabytes, or 44 trillion gigabytes.”
As companies brace for this data tsunami, they are challenged to identify the next business opportunity, improve risk management, customer engagement and sustainability. They will need to become “predictive enterprises” which leverage their data to define their future focus and how to get there. Sifting massive amounts of data to find relevant insights for business will be a continuous process, constantly evolving and adapting to business climate. IT departments need to have a robust framework to manage their organizations’ ambitions and goals.
EMC IT’s ongoing quest to meet business’ need for speed and on-demand infrastructure has entered a new chapter as our IT organization implements a software defined data center using EMC’s Federation Enterprise Hybrid Cloud technology. As we continue to build our infrastructure and services in the cloud, there are several lessons we have learned along the way that will hopefully help your organization on your path to the hybrid cloud.
Like most organizations, EMC IT has virtualized and consolidated our infrastructure, achieved significant cost savings, and continued to drive down provisioning time and increase agility. After this, we used a myriad of tools, software, and scripts to deliver some Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) capabilities. The introduction of new EMC Federation Enterprise Hybrid Cloud technology (FEHC) is accelerating our progress toward a software defined data center by leveraging a fully integrated technology stack with virtual networking, storage and security, in addition to the virtual compute layer we have been – accustomed to for years.
With the demand for IT infrastructure growing at a steady rate in most organizations, embracing converged IT infrastructure allows IT operations to keep pace with demand without ramping up resources and expenses. Converged infrastructure combines compute, storage, and network in a single package, through technology such as VCE’s Vblock. EMC IT was an early adopter of Vblock in 2009/2010—first to enable our virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and then to support the build out of our brand new 100 percent virtualized, cloud data center.
EMC IT found that standing up IT infrastructure in pre-assembled, converged chunks offers several advantages, including a single vendor for support, a single end-of-support date for all technology components, and a single code release/support stack. In addition, due to the reduction in footprint, cabling and errors, we’ve seen faster deployment times.

As SVP of IT, Jon Peirce is responsible for driving EMC IT’s transformation into an IT-as-a-Service provider/ broker and strategic business partner through technology, operating model, process and organizational innovation and evolution. Additionally, he oversees operations for several of EMC’s revenue generating cloud services and leads EMC’s Centers of Excellence in the Americas.
